This post highlights common weaknesses in elite ski pole design. For our patented solution, see the FrykenStaven™ Ski Pole Post Anchor.
Overview: In competitive cross-country and roller skiing, equipment weight is often prioritized to maximize speed. However, this design focus can introduce structural vulnerabilities. Lightweight carbon fiber poles are frequently exposed to sudden, high-impact forces that exceed their design limits — especially during races.
Observed Failure Patterns
- Collision Damage: Poles often fracture during multi-skier falls or mid-section impacts.
- Overrun Breakage: A common failure occurs when a skier runs over their own pole, typically near the basket.
- Axial Buckling: Traditional hollow shafts are prone to flexural collapse under compressive loads during aggressive poling.
FrykenStaven™ Concept: Zonal Foam Reinforcement FrykenStaven™ is a patent-pending approach that introduces internal foam reinforcement to address known failure modes. The concept involves placing low-density, high-strength foam in targeted zones within the shaft to:
- Support internal walls against denting.
- Increase stiffness and buckling resistance.
- Reinforce structurally vulnerable areas, such as near the basket.
Status and Intent FrykenStaven™ is currently under patent application. While further testing and refinement are ongoing, the concept represents a potential pathway toward more resilient pole design without significant weight penalties.
